I usually feel like a thirst bucket (sleazy) when networking. But having a mutual friend introduce me to a potential friend/colleague over lunch always makes networking much less awkward.

It does feel sleezy so I avoid these types of events.

I go through this all the time. I've gotten used to it and truly look at it like I am meeting new people who I can learn from but it does feel sleazy deep down because we are both looking for what the other can do for us.

i do feel sleezy but i like the advice in this about not trying to get something from other people.

I've always been intimidated by networking, it's just not me. I always get clammy hands and dry mouth, and I feel phony.

Spot on, Dorie! Networking is meeting cool people, we should enjoy it and not overthink it.

The whole concept of networking is patting each others backs to further your career. I think the trick is to go about it with a sense of professional camaraderie instead of taking an advantageous approach.

Sleazy is a strong word but I've felt disingenuous before. Networking isn't easy but I think Dorie's tip on remembering that you're there to meet cool peoples, not to get favors, is a good one.
